Nitro Circus – The Manliest Kind of Stupid
Since the dawn of time, men have enjoyed watching other men get hurt. By the 20th century watching other men get hurt became popular enough that someone could become handsomely wealthy by putting their bodies on the line. Whether it be Evel Knievel jumping a motorcycle, Johnny Knoxville having a sledge hammer swung at his groin or that “slow” kid you gave five bucks to ride a shopping cart down a hill in middle school, men have always stepped up to these challenges; among the manliest of these men are Travis Pastrana and the cast of Nitro Circus (with the exception of the one woman on the show, though she is pretty damn manly).
For those of you unfamiliar with Pastrana, he is a professional motor sports competitor. He has won events in motocross, supercross, freestyle and rally racing. During his career, Pastrana has suffered a slew of injuries, but being the man he is, just keeps at it. In 2006, he started a miniseries called Nitro Circus. By 2009 MTV picked up Nitro Circus and in doing so, brought some of the manliest images to ever appear on TV to our screens.
The premise of Nitro Circus is a simple one. The creators design stunts and build the ramps for these stunts to be performed on (mostly in Pastrana’s backyard). I know it sounds like something you’ve seen a million times before, but these guys take it to a new level, a la backflipping a monster truck.
In one episode the cast attempted to backflip pink tricycles over a small ramp. The video below is brilliance.
Other stunts performed include jumping from a plane with no parachute, riding a giant slip and slide that included a loop, skimming across a partially frozen giant puddle naked on skis, setting the world record for fastest speed on a tricycle, climbing to the top of trees and hanging on until it breaks off and riding a desk chair pulled by an ATV over a ramp.
